Madrid

Madrid, New Mexico

The other stop on the Turquoise Trail, and the more memorable of the two. Madrid was a company coal town that died with the mines in the 1950s and stood abandoned for the better part of two decades, a genuine ghost town on the road between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Artists began buying the empty houses for almost nothing in the early seventies, and the strip is now galleries, studios and bars run out of the same painted timber shopfronts. Twenty minutes is plenty, but they are a good twenty minutes.
